FTSE Continues Pullback

The FTSE ended the session firmly lower again.  The blue chips closed the week off firmly lower, with the major insurance firms and some of the miners causing alot of thr weight, and as New York started fairly cautiously it gave the impression that there is some apprehension in the air, and that maybe this recent bull run may be about to come to a close. The FTSE 100 closed down nearly 12 points at 4,241, whilst the FTSE 250 actually closed up nearly 43 poiunts, and for those that are interested the FTSE Small Caps also closed up, with another 23 points added at just over 2,228 for the week’s close.

Over the pond, Wall Street started cautiously and was lower in morning trade, with consumer sentiment remaining fairly fragile despite reportedly being higher this month.  By the time London was coming to a close DJIA was down about 60 points at 8,426, whilst the S&P500 was down about 5 points at 915, and the Nasdaq down about 4 points at 1,825.

Back here in London, it was a bit of a mixed bunch with the miners.  Some weighted the FTSE, which was in negative territory. Xstrata was actually at the top of the list, closing up nearly 17p at 686p, whilst Lonmin closed up 4p at 1,191p. Kazakhmys closed up 9p at 633.5p. On the other side, there were the negative, with Anglo American closing down 27p at 1,804p, Rio Tinto down 20p at 2,060p and recent popular addition Randgold Resources closing down nearly 50p 4,066p.

On to the black stuff, which was still up near the $70 bbl level, but didn’t break through.  Oil major BP closed down nearly 3p on the day at 473p despite news that it could be netting some $2 bln from the sale of assets as it exits its business in Kazakhstan, and peer RD Shell closed down 8p at 1,510p.

On to financials, well, namely the banks, they were also mixed.  Barclays closed down 1.65p at 268.1p, whilst Lloyds Banking Group closed down 0.01p at 66.49p.  On the positive side, RBS climbed again, closing up 1.38p at 38.12p, whilst Asian-bias HSBC closed up 4.5p at 510p.

The FTSE has a poor day - start of a correction?

The FTSE ended the session firmly lower, with our opinion that we would see the indicies pull back now coming in to play. The bigger blue chip stocks were all lower, with the miners and financial sector taking causing the main drop in the index, with just RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland) having a good day.  New York opened positive, but this didn’t help London.

The FTSE 100 closed down 27.41 points at 4,252.57, whilst the FTSE250 closed up 22.46 points at 7,343.31, and for those that are interested the FTSE Small Caps were up just 1.68 points at 2,205.78.

Over the pond, Wall Street had started better after housebuilder Lennar announced better figures than were expected, which helped offset the news of higher unemployment. By the time London was clsoing, the DJI was up about 75 points, whilst the S&P500 was up around 10 points and the Nasdaq up 25 points at 1,817.

Back here in London, the miners had a poor day, with news that Xstrata is by-passing Anglo American’s board by putting its merger proposals direct to shareholders noted as unortodox. This pushed up Anglo 11p to 1,831p, though, whilst Xstrata closed down 5.6p at 669.2p. Others were worse, with Rio Tinto down 51p to 2,080p and BHP Billiton down 30p at 1,365p. Lonmin, the platinum producer, closed down 27p to 1,187p.

On to the oil giants, where BP ended down 0.75p at 476.25p despoite being positive earlier on.  News that it has appointed Ericsson CEO Carl-Henric Svanberg to succeed the current chairman Peter Sutherland from 01Jan2010 was initially taken well.

On to the banks, where with the exception of RBS, which closed up 1.19p at 36.75p, they had a poor day. Barclays closed down 1.05p at 269.75p, whilst Lloyds closed down 1.07p at 66.5p, and HSBC had the worst day, closing down 12.65p at 505.5p.
